Midnight sun
Start of the only subarctic run. A solstice run, with round-the-clock daylight (previous northernmost show was Aarhus, Denmark) . This is one of
...
just four 3-show runs in '80 (plus there's 3sF80 – after that is the NYE 5-show run). If yr new to June '80, 6/7 is the big show, and the next night is the best of this run, though IIRC, the final night was the most available on tape lists, BITD of blanks & postage, and is almost as good. First Set. Jer blows the opening lyric (!?), then others. This may take some warming up. There are tech problems on the SBD so use the AUD to hear how it really sounded (not nearly as bad). After Promised Land, Mickey looks out at the high school gym and says it's like playing prom. It all falls together for They Love Each Other, and Phil is great. After El Paso Jer asks "Hey Weir! Weir! Do you know North to Alaska?" [poor Johnny Horton was playing a gig in Texas while this movie theme song was topping charts, and had a head-on with a truck on a narrow bridge]. Jovial mood onstage tonight, but the downtempo set does no favors to Tennessee Jed. The tempo is restored by Bobby for the exciting Cassidy. Zap. The AUD does not have the cuts in Althea (solid enough but no fireworks). Bobby starts Lost Sailor but changes his mind as soon as he strums the opening F#min. Jer is mixed low on Looks Like Rain so use the AUD. It's better for much of the set and doesn't cut out on Music Never Stopped. Second Set. It's an average set overall, with some above average, some below. The SBD again drops Jer's guitar for China Cat>Rider, but you can use the MTX. Jer becomes emphatic halfway through Rider, leading to a fine See, See Rider Blues ('80 is a good year for these in general). Jer perfectly presents pentatonic pastorale Peggy-O. Brent's good, the tempo is back, then Bobby gets his Lost Sailor. On Drums there's a 5sec cut on the SBD, but not on the MTX. Wharf Rat is one of the year's best (if not quite 9/4). I Need a Miracle is likewise emphatic, then the set falls off starting with an understated, late Bertha, though part of that is because Bobby is turned down. 1st Set: B- 2nd Set: C Overall = 3 stars Highlights: They Love Each Other - falls together; Phil credited Cassidy - Bobby zaps set Peggy-O - precision + Brent good + not draggy Wharf Rat - one of year's best, along with 9/4 I Need a Miracle - breezy yet emphatic SOURCES: The miller_113300 updates the old, slow SBD, and has been pitch corrected & patched, but needs EQ interventions in the 40-180 & 2k-4k ranges. It's heavy on vox in places so try the matrix. The 153162_mtx_seamons is a great MTX once you adjust the EQ and BAL. The 144904_nak700 is the best AUD, updating the previous fast sources.

Careful with that tape Eugene
FYI- Song order/listing is messed up. China Cal is US Blues; IKYR is China Cat etc. Sound quality is killer!

Listening to June '80 all the way through. So far, seems like a pretty blah run. Yes indeed, great Job Mr Miller, but Garcia.... He's got lots of lightning
...
and his technique has really matured by this year, but his precision is nowhere: sounds like he just doesn't care...and he probably doesn't. There needs to be an emoticon for heroin...

'Tis truly amazing what will can do. Hats off to CM and others in their labor of love. Here representational is sterling GD. Unfortunately, and yet, fortunately,
